Drop Saw Operation Procedure

PROC-008 | Drop Saw Operation Procedure | Version 1.0 | February 2026

Purpose

To ensure the safe operation of drop saws (mitre saws / chop saws) in the workshop area.

Scope

All workers who operate drop saws at [YOUR BUSINESS NAME].

Hazards

  • Severe laceration or amputation from blade contact
  • Eye injury from flying debris
  • Hearing damage from noise
  • Dust inhalation
  • Kickback
  • Required PPE

  • Safety glasses (mandatory — AS/NZS 1337)
  • Hearing protection (AS/NZS 1270)
  • Steel-capped safety boots
  • Close-fitting clothing (no loose sleeves, ties, or jewellery)
  • Dust mask (P2) when cutting materials that generate dust
  • Pre-Use Checks (CHECK-004)

    Before operating, check:

  • Blade is sharp, undamaged, and correctly installed
  • Blade guard is in place and functioning
  • Blade is the correct type for the material being cut
  • Work area is clear of debris and bystanders
  • Material clamp/vice is functioning
  • Power cord is undamaged and tagged
  • Dust extraction is connected (if available)
  • Safe Operation

Step 1: Secure the material firmly using the clamp or vice. Never hold material by hand near the blade. Step 2: Mark the cut line clearly. Step 3: Position yourself to the side of the blade — never directly in line with the blade. Step 4: Ensure no one else is within 2 metres of the saw. Step 5: Lower the blade guard and start the saw. Allow the blade to reach full speed before cutting. Step 6: Lower the blade smoothly and steadily through the material. Do not force the cut. Step 7: Allow the blade to come to a complete stop before raising the guard or removing the material. Step 8: Wait for the blade to stop completely before making any adjustments.

    NEVER Do This

  • Never remove or bypass the blade guard.
  • Never reach across the blade path.
  • Never cut material that is not securely clamped.
  • Never leave the saw running unattended.
  • Never use a damaged or incorrect blade.
  • Never wear gloves when operating the saw (reduces dexterity and increases risk).
  • Emergency

    If an injury occurs:

    1. Turn off the saw immediately.
    2. Call for help. Call 000 if required.
    3. Apply first aid — control bleeding with direct pressure.
    4. Do not remove embedded objects.
    5. Report the incident immediately.
