Fitness for Work Policy

Purpose

To ensure all workers are physically and mentally fit to perform their duties safely.

Scope

All workers at [YOUR BUSINESS NAME].

What is Fitness for Work?

A worker is fit for work when they are able to safely and effectively perform their duties without posing a risk to themselves or others. Fitness for work can be affected by:

  • Illness or injury
  • Fatigue
  • Alcohol or drugs (including prescription medications)
  • Mental health conditions
  • Extreme heat or physical stress
  • Worker Responsibilities

    You must:

    1. Attend work in a fit state to perform your duties safely.
    2. Inform your supervisor if you are unfit for work or if your fitness is affected by medication.
    3. Not operate forklifts, vehicles, or machinery if you are unfit to do so.
    4. Seek medical advice if you have a condition that may affect your ability to work safely.

    Supervisor Responsibilities

    Supervisors must:

    1. Assess workers for fitness for work at the start of each shift.
    2. Send home any worker who appears unfit for work.
    3. Document the assessment and any action taken.
    4. Not allow an unfit worker to operate plant or equipment.

    Medical Assessments

    [YOUR BUSINESS NAME] may require a worker to undergo a medical assessment if there are reasonable grounds to believe their fitness for work is impaired. This will be conducted by a qualified medical practitioner.
