Purpose

To maintain a safe workplace by ensuring no worker is impaired by alcohol or drugs while at work or on call.

Scope

All workers, contractors, and visitors at [YOUR BUSINESS NAME].

Policy Statement

[YOUR BUSINESS NAME] has a zero-tolerance policy for the use, possession, or distribution of alcohol or illegal drugs in the workplace. No worker may attend work or operate plant or equipment while under the influence of alcohol or drugs — including prescription medications that may impair their ability to work safely.

Prohibited Conduct

You must NOT:

  • Attend work under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Consume alcohol or illegal drugs on company premises or in company vehicles.
  • Possess, sell, or distribute illegal drugs on company premises.
  • Operate forklifts, vehicles, or machinery while impaired.
  • Prescription Medications

If you are taking prescription medication that may affect your ability to work safely (e.g., causes drowsiness, affects coordination or judgement), you must:

    1. Inform your supervisor before commencing work.
    2. Provide a medical certificate or letter from your doctor if requested.
    3. Not operate forklifts, vehicles, or machinery unless your doctor confirms it is safe to do so.

    Testing

[YOUR BUSINESS NAME] reserves the right to conduct drug and alcohol testing in the following circumstances:

  • Pre-employment (for safety-critical roles)
  • Post-incident — following any incident, near-miss, or dangerous occurrence
  • Reasonable cause — where there is reasonable suspicion of impairment
  • Random testing — in accordance with applicable legislation and any relevant industrial instrument
  • Consequences

A positive test result, refusal to test, or attendance at work while impaired may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

    Support

[YOUR BUSINESS NAME] recognises that drug and alcohol dependency is a health issue. Workers who voluntarily seek assistance for a substance problem will be supported and will not face disciplinary action for seeking help.
